San Diego Comic Con survival guide (and other cons )

So comic con 2019 just wrapped up another success con. I had a great time attending. I had about 4 interviews and countless photos of my cosplay (I was Ruby from RWBY).

People go to comic cons and other conventions like this to experience the culture, buy stuff, meet their favorite celebrity, cosplay, or just get free stuff. There so many things happening, and there’s way too many people during the event and it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Here are some quick tips to enjoy yourselves.

  • Bring snacks, water, a fan, and one of those 3 legged travel chair you can buy off Amazon.
  • Don’t wait in line for more than 30-60 mins. It’s exhausting. Only if you believe it’s really something worth it.
  • Give yourself 30 mins or more to get from one place to the next.
  • If there’s a panel you really wanna catch (and it might be super popular), arrive 1-3hrs early to check if there’s a line or if you can just walk in.
  • Sometimes it’s too crowded, especially in the exhibit hall, pick a destination and make your way there, unless you got time to wander aimlessly. Also carry a fan. (So many sweaty people)
  • The free offsite events are plentiful and you’ll want to do all of them. Don’t. Pick a few to check out and go there on a day you don’t have a badge.
  • If there’s a series you’re following closely, watch their social media for comic con events during the day. (I met the voice actors from RWBY from a cosplay meetup hosted by rooster teeth).
  • For cosplay:
    • You might get interviewed and lots of photos. Pick your favorite character pose.
    • Some people might want to discuss the series with you, so brush up on the lastest movie or season.
    • If your traveling with your costume and props, pack each character costume and accessories into each individual bag, which will help reduce missing costume pieces.
    • Try to make your props easy to collapse and pack into a suitcase. (One year I used a snowboard bag to check in my props into oversize).

In the end, just have fun!
