The name sounds more exciting than the actual tomb… O.o
Lol, well we finally made our trip to Newgrange this past Saturday, and the tombs were over 5000 years old. They’re really old rocks. So apparently the tombs are built obviously for the dead, but also to follow the way the sun moves across the sky at a particualar point of the year. The architecture of the tombs were designed so that on the first day of summer when the sun rises, sunlight will enter the tomb and reunite their ancestors with the light of day. It’s a very interesting story. There are 3 tombs, the Newgrange tomb, the Knowth tomb, and the Dowth tomb. We only went to the newgrange tomb. Here’s what the tomb looks like on the outside: (note the tomb has been remodeled to look like what it used to be, but most the rocks inside the tomb are preserved…)
To the right is the entrance to the tomb (and as you can see those perfectly cut rock walls are probably made when it was remodeled) But the big stone with the swirly shapes are the art on the tomb entrance. The swirls represent the 3 tombs, and the artwork represent the map of the area.
As you can see below there 3 swirls on the rock:
The bottom image is the surrounding area of the tomb. (yes those are sheep off in a distance)
We could only visit the tomb at Newgrange because we didn’t have enough time to visit the rest of the tombs. There was only one bus that goes from Dublin to Newgrange and the last bus left at 3pm, so we had to leave early. Well we had some delicious Malaysian food in Dublin after. 😀
But after that, we decided to play a drinking game (Kings’ Cup) at a friend’s apartment…but of course I have no pictures from that event 😉
Next day we went to go see Inception, which I thought was a pretty good movie (almost good enough to be the new Matrix but not quite), but I felt the actor Leonardo DiCaprio plays the same role of marrying a crazy wife who and the family man who loves his children. Well because I saw the same role played out in Shutter Island. I thought it was a good movie, but I wished that they had some more explanation on the science behind the technology inducing inception.
I’m going to the Festival of world cultures (http://www.festivalofworldcultures.com/) event this weekend, maybe I can post some more videos of my adventures 🙂
